Blyth Offshore Wind Demonstration Project Fully Commissioned

Aarhus, June 22, 2018

MHI Vestas completes commissioning of five V164-8.4 MW turbines, now the world’s most powerful, commercially installed wind turbine.

With installation and commissioning now complete at the Blyth Offshore Wind Demonstration Project, MHI Vestas Offshore Wind, along with customer EDF Renewables, celebrates the inauguration of the industry’s latest pioneering demonstrator project off the northeast coast of England. The project has a generating capacity of 41.5 MW and will generate enough renewable energy to power 34,000 households with low carbon energy.

The project boasts the world’s most powerful installed turbine – the V164-8.4 MW from MHI Vestas – as well as the installation and operation of 66kV equipment, including switchgear, transformer, and array cables. The project positions MHI Vestas well as the industry moves increasingly toward the 66kV standard.

MHI Vestas Chief Operating Officer, Flemming Ougaard, said, “We’re proud to have partnered with EDF Renewables in bringing the Blyth Demonstration Project to life. This wind park will provide invaluable insights on breakthrough technologies in offshore wind – technologies that will undoubtedly advance the clean energy transition in the UK.”

The announcement comes on the heels of the inauguration of Burbo Bank Extension in the UK earlier this year, the world’s first offshore wind project to feature the game-changing V164 turbine platform from MHI Vestas.
